The woods were getting darker as the evening claimed the day. Night was sliding into the woods like a snake. It wound its way through the trees, filling up the spaces and growing in the shadows. The sounds that normally filled the air fell silent, as the coming night seemed to swallow them as it did the light.
Kari was lost.
Though she had grown up in a house at the edge of the wood, her childhood had been filled with warnings and stories about what monsters made the forest their home. She had never strayed so far into the wood that she could not see her home. Today, however, was different.
The banker had come to talk to her parents. When he left, her father's debt was forgiven. And she was betrothed to his son.
Enraged that her parents would do such a thing, Kari stormed from her house, ignoring the calls of her mother to come back. She had simply gone where her feet led her. When she looked up from her haze of anger, she was deep in the heart of the woods. She tried to follow her path back, but after an hour had passed, Kari knew that she was hopelessly lost.
Sitting down on a convenient rock, Kari tried not to cry.
It was getting colder now, and Kari pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders. She was thankful that she had at least remembered that, even as she cursed herself for running off in the first place. The cloak had been her birthday gift. It was finely made and kept her warm. But best of all was the color, a deep vibrant red.
Now it was all Kari had to keep her warm in the coming night. With that thought, tears did come, hopelessly running down her cheeks.
"Why so sad, little one? Are you lost?"
Kari screamed at the unexpected voice behind her. She threw herself forward and whirled around to face the intruder, before tripping and falling flat on the ground.
Standing there, smirking at her antics, was a woman. She stood where the shadows hid her features, but she was tall, taller than her father even, and lithe. Her well-proportioned body was barely covered by her tight leather outfit.
"What do you want? Who are you?" Kari demanded.
"What do I want? Well, I suppose I want many things, not most of which should be of concern to you. As to who I am, you may call me Selena, little one."
Kari's fear ebbed under the realization that here was someone who might help her.
"Selena? Um, do you know these woods well? I mean, I'm lost. I need to get home. I live in a small house near-"
"I know where you live."
"Um... you do?" Kari questioned.
"Yes. And I can lead you back there. The real question here is: What's in it for me?"
"What's in it for... I... I don't know what you mean," Kari stammered.
Then Selena stepped out from under the trees and into the fading light. Long silver-gray hair flowed down past her shoulders and down her back. Her eyes were a bright red. Furry ears that matched her hair perked forward to catch sound. A silky tail twitched and flicked behind her. For a moment that was the only movement.
"You... you're a... a wolf."
A slow sexy smile curved Selena's lips.
"Yes, yes I am."
And then Kari was off and running.
Every scary bedtime story she had ever heard babbled through her head as she tore head long past the tress and bushes that reached out with prickly branches to rip her skin and clothes. The last of the evening gave way to the oncoming night. Her breath burned in her lungs and terror gripped her heart as it tried to beat out of her chest. With a gasp, she burst into a clearing. She had no time to take in the change as she was hit from behind.
Kari fell forward with a cry of surprise. She felt the hot breath of her pursuer near her ear. Selena was on all fours above her, trapping her. She closed her eyes tight, unsure of what would happen next, but dreading it.
"You know, it is not safe to run like that. Especially at night. You could have hurt yourself."
Of all the things Kari would have expected to hear, a scolding was not one of them. Another moment of silence past before Selena spoke again.
"You did not have to do that. I am not going to hurt you," she said in a soft voice. "I would have left you alone if you had asked."
"If you would leave me alone," Kari braved, "why did you chase me?"
"You ran."
Something in the way Selena stated that simple fact sent shivers down Kari's spine.
"Oh," She whispered.
Kari felt the she-wolf shift her weight to lie flat against her. Almost spooning Kari to the ground, but laying slightly on her right side. Selena slid her right arm under Kari, pulling the young woman close while running her free hand through the girl's golden hair.
"Why did you run? Was it simply because I am a wolf? Or did my teasing frighten you so?" Selena asked.

Then the wolf woman started talking again.
"I have seen you before. I have watched when you work and play by your home. I have watched you when you came into my woods. I have listened to you sing to yourself when you think no one is there to hear. I have watched you when you picked flowers for your hair. I have watched you as you have done thousands of different things. I could not help myself. You are so beautiful," Selena nuzzled Kari's hair, and breathed deeply. "So very beautiful." The she-wolf trailed her fingers down the girl's throat and over her shoulder. "I never thought to show myself to you. I would not have this time, except that you looked so lost..."
Selena's words amplified the emotions that were already twisting through Kari's body. Fear and pleasure in equal parts mixed until she could no longer tell them apart. There was a dampness between her legs that she could not explain. A whimper escaped from her.
Selena heard it.
"My sweet Kari. I am only scaring you more, am I not? I am sorry. But it is my nature."
Selena caressed Kari's side, moving her hand down over her waist. She came to a stop on Kari's thigh. Slowly Selena pulled the skirt under her fingers until they rested on flesh. While she stroked the girl's leg, Selena placed small kisses on the back of her neck. She hummed in pleasure.

Kari was startled by the vehemence in the she-wolf's voice. She opened her mouth to defend her family, but no words came out.
"You do not have to go back, my love. Not if you do not wish it."
Kari rolled over in Selena's arms, facing the wolf woman for the first time since they met. The she-wolf's eyes seemed to glow in the moonlight as she looked down at the young woman. Kari raised her hand to touch Selena's cheek. She caressed her lover's face and ran her fingers through silver locks.
"Where would I go?" She asked.
Selena leaned down and kissed Kari. A slow, sweet meting of the lips that filled Kari with a sense of warmth.
"Stay with me." Selena murmured against Kari's mouth. "Stay with me and I will love you forever."
Kari wrapped her arms around Selena's neck. "Yes."
